GREENVILLE, S.C. – Local mattress manufacturer Park Place Corporation has been recognized in the 23rd annual Grant Thornton LLP Top 100 ranking of South Carolina’s largest privately owned companies, a notable achievement that the family-run company has attained for the past five years. Park Place has continually risen in the prestigious ranking since its first appearance on the list in 2003, maintaining a strong 75th position in 2007.
To qualify for the South Carolina 100, companies must be privately held, headquartered within the state and cannot be a subsidiary of any other company. Rankings are a reflection of net revenues from the recently completed fiscal year.
“As a family business since our beginning, Park Place has faced the constant pressure of big bedding producers and complex marketplace conditions and, despite these challenges, we continue to grow and remain true to our commitment—to produce top-quality bedding products and deliver superior customer service,” said Jimmy Orders, president of Park Place Corporation. “With a solid track-record and an ambitious business plan, we anticipate sustained growth of the Park Place brand in 2008.”
The South Carolina 100 is compiled by Grant Thornton LLP, one of the largest U.S. accounting firms, in association with the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce.
Park Place Corporation, founded in 1931 as Orders Mattress Company is headquartered in Greenville, South Carolina on a 40-acre campus in a Century 2000, state-of-the-art designed facility. Park Place manufactures mattresses primarily under the Park Place and Comfortaire brands. Founded during the throes of the Great Depression, the company continues to operate under the direction of three third-generation members of the Orders family. Greenville, SC —Mattress Works, an independent bedding company, has opened its first three independently operated sleep shops in South Carolina—all within Wal-Mart Super Centers—including North Myrtle Beach, North Charleston and Travelers Rest.
Mattress Works sleep shops offer a “full service mattress shopping experience” with knowledgeable sleep consultants available to assist the customer through the purchasing process, according to David Karr, company CEO.
Today’s mattress buyers demand value-priced products to fit their budget, layaway and financing, home delivery, removal of their old mattress and set up of their new purchase, Karr stated. Mattress Works delivers this entire spectrum of top-quality service.
Mattress Works locations occupy 450-1150 square-foot footprints at the front of Wal-Mart Super Center stores. Product assortments within each store include velocity price points between $299 and $1,299, including two memory foam mattress options. “Our goal is to provide Wal-Mart shoppers with the ‘value experience’ that they have come to expect,” Karr emphasized.
With the initial store roll-out, Mattress Works is actively seeking key retail Operating Partners to operate their own Mattress Works location in all markets served by Wal-Mart Super Centers, stated Edwin Shoffner, Company COO.
"I am very excited to be a part of Mattress Works. My sales volume is going as expected, and the daily traffic through my store is unbelievable. Even though we are very early in the game, I am already making plans to accelerate the growth of this business," commented Chad Hill, North Myrtle Beach (SC) Operating Partner.
